The Mad Science behind the Klymit Static V…This Aint your Momma’s Air Bed!
Like the Award Winning Inertia X Frame, the Klymit Static V represents a landmark in sleeping pad technology. It delivers incredible comfort, enhanced durability, and a better night’s sleep….all at an alarmingly light weight, small pack size, and industry leading ease of use.
The goal for the creation of the Static V was lofty. We set out to solve the 3 major problems of air filled sleeping surfaces, from your old school queen airbed to our competitors’ pads. We achieved this, and offer this pad at an amazing price point. Perhaps we err in our romance, but we believe landmarks such as these should not be limited only to those who can afford them, and the Static V is tearing down mental barriers for outdoor adventure as I write this. I’ll let the advancements that we achieved through challenging these problems elucidate why everyone sleeps like a baby on the Static V:
Problem 1: Air Movement…aka the ‘waterbed effect’
We observed that on both horizontally and vertically baffled camping pads that when you move on the pad to adjust your sleeping position, the pad keeps moving, bouncing around, and wallowing long after, in a way that we call the “waterbed effect”. The reason for this is the large air spaces in the baffles hold air at less pressure than the small spaces the air passes through on the weld terminations at the head, foot, or sides of the camping pad under movement. Therefore, when you move it takes a considerable amount of time for these pressure spikes through the terminations to equalize across the entire pad.
Solution 1: The Static V disperses air in 6 directions from every chamber, and pressure is focused towards the side rails to keep you on the pad, even under movement. By spreading the air out in multiple directions and through multiple channels, we can make an air filled surface feel and react more like thick foam. We take the rebound and bounce out, allowing you to sink into the pad and feel stable and supported. The increase in comfort is remarkable, and more noticeable the more nights you are on the trail.
Problem 2: Warmth
The classic configurations (horizontal and vertically baffled) of inflatable sleeping surfaces are often chilly, and all have an r-value of 1. The air movement of the pads, and the lack of significant deep welds that can retain warmth limit their use to warm nights and provide convective and conductive limitations.
Solution 2: The Static V utilizes the anatomically patterned V shape body map that is not only more supportive and comfortable, its deep welds allow for the preservation of the body’s warmth in air pockets, limit air movement, and disperse cold air below. The increase in warmth is massive, 30%, elevating the Static V as the warmest pad in its class at an r-value of 1.3.
This brings up a contentious issue in camping pads, and honestly is a topic that is so full of misdirection it saddens us. Thermodynamics is a quantifiable science. Most of our competitors lie to you. Even since launching this pad one of our competitors has “magically’ increased the r value of their un-insulated pads to 1.5 with the same fabrics and configuration that it has been in for more than 4 years. Please know that we will never lie to our customers for a good marketing story or sales. Trading your dignity and integrity for money and confusing expectations for passionate adventurers will yield you nothing but a pocket full of lies and an empty soul.
Problem 3: Ease of Inflation
Many camping pads in a similar configuration require 30 to 50 breaths. Has anyone been on a climb at altitude and watched someone pass out from blowing up their camping pad? We have! There is just no reason to toil with that many breaths.
Solution 3: 7-15 breaths for the Static V. BAM!!!! I did it at 6 at Sea Level this fall after a solid high altitude summer of training. If you beat me you get a discount. Not only do our deep, shaped welds increase durability, they allow us to adjust the volume and thermodynamics of the pad. This means quicker set up, take down, and more fun in between.
These solutions combine to dramatically increase comfort over any other air bed on the market. At Klymit, through the development of all of our pads leading up to the Static V, we have developed a body of knowledge on how to articulate inflatables and make the air go where we want, do what we want it to do, and support the sleeper or paddler so much better. We can control volume and insure a quick and easy take down, and make our pads lighter, warmer, and more durable.

Sitting on a stump, hot cup of coffee in my hand, warm sunshine on my back in the still crisp morning air, looking out on nearby mountain tops and a forest of bare trees, silver from a 2003 wildfire, Tanya and Carson nearby at our campsite, I felt truly at peace. I reflected on how lucky I am to live in place where such a spot is a short drive from home (well, kind of short, about 5 1/2 hours).
We were talking a little Type 2 and a little Product Dev one day, and Josh from Ruta Locura gave us a challenge. Can we re-create and ultralight raft similar to that of the venerated Curtis design model, something that weighs and packs little, but adds a very large slice of adventure for a paddler or fisherman? Needless to say, we were intrigued. The gauntlet had been thrown down, and after a little geometry (Yes, Mrs. Damron we really did use math in our professional life, you were right!) we had an oval boat shape that mimicked traditional designs but could be manufactured in 2D. It was an adequate shape, that gave you good flotation, but the ergonomics, paddling position, and water trackability were not optimal. Now that we knew we could accomplish the classic template, it became time to do what we do, articulate it, use shapes to focus air pressure where we want it to go, and see if we could make it better.
The shape of the LWD is the resultant composite of the careful targeting of problems with classic lightweight raft designs: We try to observe problems as challenges, and these are the way we came to the solutions:

Before we started Klymit, we found most camping pads very uncomfortable. They do not contour with the human body, and allow air to be the least stable under the heaviest parts of the sleeper, or where they need it the most. They allow air to negatively affect the orientation of the sleeper’s body, and encourage the movement of air by pressure bottlenecks and releases. There are things about camping pad design that simply make us scratch our head, and make odd faces.
Even still, the “side rails” of our competitors are larger air chambers that collapse easier when weighted, and counterproductive. The weights of our pads are being chased by companies willing to sacrifice durability for a marketing story, and some just flat out lie about the performance of their pads.
Where others mislead is where we have legitimacy. Everything we do, every shape, loft pocket, weld termination, taper, or contour, is to support your body while you sleep, and the truth is emerging quickly due to this advanced step forward in camping pad thought. We have all been told that there are no straight lines in nature (which isn’t necessarily true. Once you get to the intra-cellular level most structures are triangular and geodesic, which essentially are comprised of many small straight lines…but I digress. Here is where our minds were at:
Premise 1: Support of the body is optimal when matching the contours of the body.
Premise 2: The human body does not have any straight lines.
Premise 3: The human body does not weight a surface in a linear fashion.
Conclusion 1: To optimally support the body, then, a straight line, like those on longitudinally and horizontally baffled camping pads would not be optimal.
Conclusion 2: A camping pad that is designed to contour around and assist the body optimally where it applies the most pressure would be more supportive and enhance comfort.
Solution: The patented Anatomical Body Map only from Klymit.
Our approach here was to take a look at how the human body is structured and reproduce the angles of support as close as possible to the body. We match the angles of the muscular structure of the human back, and adjoin the angles with a weld shape that better contours and supports the human spine. The resulting shape resembles a ‘V’ pattern, and it is a more comfortable shape that supports the body better.

The Inertia X Frame was Klymit’s first entry into the camping pad market in Summer 2010. Subsequently, it has won just about every innovation award out there, and is still amazing adventurers with its comfort and incredible specs. There is nothing out there that offers comparable comfort at a comparable weight. Standing as a landmark of technical design, comfort was achieved with Klymit’s unique and patented pressure point body map.
We noticed that if you lie down on the floor or a flat surface on your back, you will notice that your body only touches the ground in 5 places; your head, shoulders, glutes, calves and feet. Roll on your side, and you will notice those pressure points do not change. We simply support the pressure points of your body with luxurious contact points that you can set at your perfect pressure preference, and then remove the rest of the unnecessary material.
With 1-2 breaths you can have a soft surface that wraps around your pressure points but keeps you off of the ground, or you can bring the included bulb pump, to provide a flat, solid surface for your pressure points to lie easily on top of. At night, when the volume of the pad decreases due to tempering, the user can simply reach up and add a couple pumps to restore their pad to its preferred volume and firmness, all while staying comfortably tucked in.
We aren’t dumb here at Klymit, but we sometimes lack foresight….ok, sometimes we are a little dumb. We thought, as everyone else who has seen loft pockets in our sleeping pads for the first time, were going to be cold spots. We initially thought that the Inertia X Frame would be a mostly summer pad. As some of the greatest discoveries of science are happy accidents…we were very wrong.
Our nights testing various configurations of the X frame were down right toasty. We could not figure out why we could be sleeping on something so fluted, yet be so warm. Then, it hit us. We realized that the negative space was allowing our sleeping bag to loft down, and that we were capturing the warmth of our sleeping bag underneath us for the first time! This simply does not happen in product development. Lighter, more compact, more comfortable, more durable, AND WARMER! They also allow the X Frame to be the only breathable pad for those hot jungle or desert nights…No sweaty back!!! Our next call was to our legal team to get loft pockets patented.
Among the more impressive aspects of the Inertia X Frame is in its anatomical support and neutrality. A couple of us at Klymit are adventure racers, speed hikers, trail runners, and bike packers. Straight up, WE GO HARD, and suffer the joint pain, IT band issues, and other various blisters, abrasions, and little twinges and niggles that come with the territory.
Coincidental with our realization that the body only touches a flat surface in 5 places, we also noticed that most camping pads’ lack of support CHANGED the orientation of those 5 parts of the body that needed support. On most camping pads the back becomes arched with air pressure, and you end up with your legs higher than your head and back because your head and shoulders are heavier, and the pad is inadequate at keeping the air pressure under your pressure points. This takes you out of your natural alignment, puts pressure on your lower back, puts pressure on your pira formis, and contributes to pain, discomfort, and for the athlete, the dreaded IT band syndrome!
The X Frame focuses all air pressure right to wear you need it, your pressure points. It removes all pressure from the rest of your body, and allows your body to lie neutrally on the pad. We have people with back problems that put it under the sheets on their bed, and some with chronic issues that say those issues go away with the X Frame. For the adventurer it gives you the best chance at not only a good night’s sleep, but for your body to be rested, recovered and ready for the next epic day.
The book of camping pads began to be rewritten here. The conventional approach to thermodynamics, efficiency of materials, advanced design, body support, weld shape, weld thickness, and even material selection has entered a new chapter, even for our competitors, and catalyzed by the X Frame.
A true contribution to the evolution of a category gives us affirmation. Yet we have learned much since the X Frame, and have further aspirations we hope will bring a similar smile to the face of adventure.
Our gear is derived of romance and struggle: purpose built and incentivized by the solutions to our own personal challenges that we encounter in our adventures. Here at the confluence of imagination, physics, problem solving, and inspiration is an effort to perpetuate the inspired to new heights. Less marketing and more introspection…this is our pledge: We will remain unfettered by the convolution and smoke and mirrors marketing that seeks to rob the adventurer of both their reason and discernment. We will continue to focus on empowering the adventurous, decreasing the inhibitions of those that dabble in the outdoors, and creating gear that lets us all challenge what we perceived to be our personal limits. This is a glimpse into our minds, and perhaps describes the real Klymit difference. Mad Science is the playful term we lend to this process of ideation and evolution.

I remember the year, 1984. I was 6, and I remember my first PVC pool toy. It was a simple, horizontally baffled inflatable. It was unstable, and barely kept my tiny frame out of the water. As I sit and think about it, I am still….baffled…In 30 years why have inflatable designs, from air beds, camping pads, to pool toys, remained so homogenous?
The answer is approach. Prior to Klymit arriving on the scene the paradigm of camping pads was strictly focused on one thing, trying to figure out how to make smaller versions of beds. Upon examination, however, the defining features of beds make this quite difficult, and the execution by camping pad manufacturers has been stymied by the wrong approach, the wrong optic. But as Descartes so aptly responded to Aristotle’s approach to physics, the question is not, “why does the arrow fly?” Gravity, and therefore physics, was found by answering the question, “why does the arrow stop?”
A novel approach…
Klymit’s approach to camping pads bears a similar departure from the classical operant paradigm of creating camping pads. We do not try to mimic beds. We take a careful look at the human body and create sleeping surfaces that are built to both support and contour around the human anatomy. This approach allows us to achieve shapes that specifically target problems like instability, rolling off of the pad, and warmth. This allows us to supply more comfort and a better nights’ sleep with the lowest weight and pack size in the industry, while using more durable fabrics.
A novel method…
We then commissioned the custom design and construction of a prototyping machine that allows us to develop products in a fraction of the time of our competitors. It allows us to articulate the designs completely. Ideas can be tested within minutes, and move from concept into reality within an hour. Pad shapes, sizes, weld shapes, fabrics, laminates, and every part of the construction process that takes months of back and forth with others’ factories; takes minutes for us at Klymit.

I still haven't had much chance to get out for some new photo adventures, so here's one from five years ago this month (or close enough, the actual trip started in September but ended in October). I took these images on a raft trip through Stillwater and Cataract Canyons on the Green and Colorado Rivers in Canyonlands National Park . Tanya and I joined the trip about 1/3 of the way in, at Mineral Bottom; the trip actually started at Green River State Park and traveled through Labyrinth Canyon prior to reaching Mineral Bottom.
Ueli is just one of those guys that owns something epic like alpinism and takes it to the next level. The many attributes that push him to these feats are admirable. The drive and determination that push him and converge with an elite aerobic threshold and climbing acumen leave us awestruck, and inspired. Keep going hard, Ueli!
